Late November into December is Liuwa’s signature spectacle season, when the first rains, towering storm clouds, flowers, and migrating wildebeest create its most iconic atmosphere.

September to November is one of Liuwa’s most exciting periods, with heat building across the plains, grass thinning for easier wildlife spotting, and dramatic skies arriving as the first rains approach. November is especially atmospheric, with storms, fresh flowers, and migration movement combining into a spectacular, photogenic safari season.

December to February is the heart of the rainy season, when Liuwa turns greener, wetter, and more elemental. The scenery becomes lush and dramatic, birdlife is strong, and the plains feel even more remote, though conditions can be more challenging and wildlife visibility is less straightforward than in the drier months.

March to May is a transition period as flood and rain conditions begin easing and the plains gradually open up again. The landscape can still feel fresh and beautiful, with fewer visitors and a deep sense of wilderness, while late autumn begins moving toward the cooler dry pattern.

June to August is dry, cooler, and increasingly rewarding for classic safari viewing as access improves, water recedes, and vegetation thins. This is when Liuwa starts to feel more open and navigable, making wildlife easier to spot across its enormous floodplain setting.

Location

Getting There

From central Mongu, drive west across the floodplain toward Kalabo, which is the main gateway to Liuwa Plain National Park. From there, continue into the park via reception and the internal 4x4 routes. You can also reach Kalabo by air charter, then continue by road into Liuwa for the final stretch.
