When to visit

Jul. to Oct. is the prime window for Busanga Plains, when floodwaters recede, camps are open, and wildlife viewing becomes dramatically stronger.

Spring, from Sep. to Nov., is one of the most dramatic times in Busanga Plains, with dry conditions, thinning grass, and intense wildlife concentration around remaining water. September and October are especially rewarding for predator sightings and open floodplain game viewing, while November signals rising heat and the first transition toward the rains.

Summer · Dec, Jan, Feb

Summer, from Dec. to Feb., is the wet, flooded season, when Busanga transforms into a lush watery world of channels, marsh, and green abundance. The landscape is striking, but access becomes highly limited, many seasonal camps are closed, and this is not the easiest period for classic safari logistics on the plains.

Autumn · Mar, Apr, May

Autumn, from Mar. to May., is a transitional season as the rains ease and the plains begin drying out, while the landscape still holds rich green colour and water. Conditions improve gradually, but access and camp reopening depend on flood retreat, making later autumn more practical than the earlier months.

Winter · Jun, Jul, Aug

Winter, from Jun. to Aug., is one of the best times to experience Busanga Plains, with cool mornings, almost no rain, reopening seasonal camps, and increasingly rewarding wildlife viewing. The floodplain begins to reveal its huge open character, and the combination of comfort, visibility, and safari atmosphere is superb.

Location

Getting There

From Lusaka, the easiest route is usually by light charter flight to Busanga Airstrip during the dry season. You can also reach Busanga Plains by road through Kafue National Park, though the drive is long and the northern tracks are generally only manageable in the drier months.
