About W National Park

W National Park stands out for the scale of the landscape and how wild it still feels. As part of the wider W-Arly-Pendjari Complex, it is known for savannah, river systems, and some of West Africa’s most important remaining wildlife habitats, so the experience feels more remote and less built around tourism than many better-known safari parks. It works well if you want something that feels more rugged and less usual.

November to February is the most comfortable overall period, with dry conditions, clearer skies, and easier wildlife viewing across northern Benin.

Spring runs from Mar. to May and grows steadily hotter before the rains build. March can still feel dry and dramatic, but April and May become warmer, greener, and less comfortable for long game drives as humidity and rainfall begin to rise.

Summer · Jun, Jul, Aug

Summer spans Jun. to Aug. and is the heart of the rainy season, when the park turns lush and intensely green. The scenery is beautiful and alive, but wetter tracks and thicker vegetation can make classic safari conditions less reliable than in the dry months.

Autumn · Sep, Oct, Nov

Autumn falls from Sep. to Nov. and begins wet before drying out decisively later in the season. September can still feel humid and green, while October and especially November become much more attractive for wildlife viewing and easier exploration.

Winter · Dec, Jan, Feb

Winter in W National Park runs from Dec. to Feb. and is the park’s most appealing season, with dry weather, bright light, and easier access. This is when the northern Benin bush feels crispest, most comfortable, and most rewarding for travellers chasing classic wildlife conditions.

Location

Getting There

W National Park is located in far northern Benin near the borders of Niger and Burkina Faso, and is usually reached by road from Cotonou via Kandi, or from nearby regional gateways depending on which side of the park you are entering.
