About Southern Great Barrier Reef

The Southern Great Barrier Reef is where you can experience the reef without the crowds. You’ll find vibrant coral, marine life, and crystal-clear waters perfect for snorkeling and diving. Visit spots like Lady Elliot and Heron Islands to swim with turtles, manta rays, and colorful fish. The nearby coastal towns offer laid-back charm and easy access to the reef. Whether you want adventure or relaxation, this part of the reef feels accessible and welcoming.

When to visit

Dry season from June to October is ideal for reef trips, with clear skies, low humidity, and calm seas that make island-hopping and snorkeling easy.

Most popular: June - October

Spring · Sep, Oct, Nov

Spring on the Capricorn Coast is warm and pleasant, with low humidity and fewer crowds. It’s a great time to visit Great Keppel Island, where the water is already warming up for snorkeling. Coastal trails and national parks like Byfield are filled with wildflowers, and the weather usually stays dry and breezy. It’s an easy season to balance both land and sea activities.

Summer · Dec, Jan, Feb

Summer is the hottest and wettest time of year, with average highs around 30°C and the occasional tropical storm. While the humidity can be intense, this season also brings lush green landscapes and active marine life. If you don’t mind the heat or a short afternoon downpour, the islands are still very much accessible, and water visibility is decent for reef diving. Just pack light clothing and stay hydrated.

Autumn · Mar, Apr, May

Autumn offers a welcome break from the summer heat, with temperatures dropping slightly and the humidity easing up. Rainfall decreases through March and April, making it a solid time for reef trips and island hopping. The beaches are quieter, and tour operators often have more flexible schedules. Whether you’re kayaking, snorkeling, or enjoying fish and chips in Yeppoon, the weather usually works in your favor.

Winter · Jun, Jul, Aug

Winter is mild, dry, and often underrated. With daytime highs in the low to mid 20s and plenty of sunshine, it’s perfect for outdoor activities and reef exploration. The sea stays warm enough for swimming, and visibility is at its best for diving. It’s also the quietest season aside from school holidays, which means less competition for day tours and accommodation around the coast.
