Deep Ellum

About Deep Ellum

Deep Ellum is Dallas’ longtime music and arts neighborhood, with roots stretching back to the 1870s and a major role in the city’s blues and jazz history. Today, its brick streets are lined with murals, independent shops, galleries, restaurants and live music venues. The neighborhood feels different depending on when you visit, with street art and shopping during the day and a much busier music and nightlife scene after dark.

When to visit

Spring brings milder afternoons and longer daylight, making it easier to explore Deep Ellum’s murals, shops and galleries before its nightlife picks up later.

Most popular: March - May

Spring · Mar, Apr, May

Dallas warms steadily through spring, giving you more daylight for walking Deep Ellum’s mural-covered streets and browsing its shops and galleries. Temperatures rise noticeably toward May, while thunderstorms and rainy days also become more frequent. The neighborhood stays active into the evening as restaurants, bars and music venues begin filling up. Earlier hours suit street art and photography, while evenings show the district’s stronger connection to live music and nightlife.

Summer · Jun, Jul, Aug

Summer brings intense heat to Dallas, with normal highs reaching around 96°F in July and August and many days climbing above 100°F. Deep Ellum is easier to explore earlier in the day or after sunset, especially if you plan to walk between murals, shops and venues. Restaurants and indoor entertainment provide breaks from the afternoon heat. The district becomes livelier later in the evening, when temperatures ease and its music and nightlife scene takes over.

Autumn · Sep, Oct, Nov

September can still feel like summer, but temperatures gradually fall through October and November. The milder weather later in the season makes walking between murals, galleries, shops and restaurants much easier. Deep Ellum’s event calendar continues throughout autumn, with live music, markets and other neighborhood programming adding more reasons to stay into the evening. Rain and thunderstorms remain possible, particularly earlier in the season, but the strongest summer heat steadily becomes less of a factor.

Winter · Dec, Jan, Feb

Winter is quieter outdoors, though Deep Ellum’s restaurants, galleries, music venues and nightlife continue throughout the season. Dallas usually has mild daytime temperatures, but strong cold fronts can bring freezing mornings, ice and occasional snowfall. This is a good period for spending more time inside venues rather than planning a long mural walk. Crowds can also be lighter outside major events and weekends, while evenings remain the busiest time for live performances and nightlife.
