About Kanchanaburi

The traditional Thai village of Kanchanaburi is steeped in history, having been a focal point of the Japanese occupation during WW2. On the banks of the River Khwae, thousands of allied prisoners of war were put to work building the infamous Death Railway (also known as the Burma Railway) under the most treacherous conditions. Many of the prisoners were worked to death, and are buried at the nearby Kanchanaburi War Cemetery.
