About Huab River

The Huab River is an often dry riverbed in northwestern Namibia, home to herds of desert elephants who have acclimatised to the extremely dry conditions, often going days without water. The Huab River is a popular spot for camping and four-wheel driving.

When to visit

The best time to visit the Huab River is during the cooler months when wildlife is more active and the weather is comfortable.

Most popular: April - June

Spring · Sep, Oct, Nov

Visiting the Huab River in Namibia during spring (September to November) offers travelers a pleasant experience with mild temperatures and blooming landscapes. The weather is generally warm during the day, with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C, making it comfortable for outdoor activities like hiking and wildlife viewing. The riverbanks come alive with greenery, attracting various bird species, making it a great time for birdwatching. The spring season also marks the beginning of the dry season, so you can expect clear skies and minimal rainfall, ensuring uninterrupted exploration.

Summer · Dec, Jan, Feb

Summer (December to February) in the Huab River area is characterized by high temperatures and occasional thunderstorms. Daytime temperatures can soar above 35°C, so it's essential to stay hydrated and protected from the sun. Despite the heat, summer brings a unique charm as the sporadic rains rejuvenate the arid landscape, leading to brief yet beautiful bursts of greenery. The river might flow more robustly during this period, creating opportunities for water-based activities like kayaking. However, be prepared for potential afternoon storms and plan your activities accordingly.

Autumn · Mar, Apr, May

Autumn (March to May) provides a more temperate climate for visiting the Huab River. With temperatures ranging from 15°C to 30°C, the weather is more manageable, and the summer rains have usually tapered off, leaving behind lush vegetation. This season is ideal for game drives and guided tours as the wildlife is more visible around the river, taking advantage of the remaining water sources. The reduced tourist crowds in autumn also mean a more tranquil experience, allowing for uninterrupted enjoyment of the region's natural beauty.

Winter · Jun, Jul, Aug

Winter (June to August) at the Huab River is marked by cooler temperatures and dry conditions. Daytime temperatures hover between 10°C and 25°C, while nights can get quite chilly, dropping to around 5°C. This season offers clear, sunny days perfect for outdoor adventures without the intense heat of summer. The dry weather makes it easier to spot wildlife as animals congregate around the river and other water sources. Travelers should pack layers to stay warm during the cold nights and early mornings, but can look forward to comfortable and predictable weather throughout the day.
