Tarrafal Beach is one of the easiest places on Santiago to enjoy straight away. The bay feels calmer and more relaxed than much of the island’s coast, with soft sand, swimmable water, and palm trees that make it feel a little different from Santiago’s more rugged side. It also sits right by town, so the beach feels easy to pair with a slower day around Tarrafal itself. 

When to visit

November to July is the strongest window for dry, sunny beach weather, while August to October is hotter, greener, and noticeably rainier.

Spring is one of the best times to enjoy Tarrafal Beach, with warm sunshine, almost no rain, and clear, comfortable swimming conditions in the bay. The atmosphere feels relaxed and open, making it ideal for long beach days, easy walks, and slow afternoons by the water.

Tarrafal Beach is located in Tarrafal on the north coast of Santiago, and is usually reached in about 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes by road from Nelson Mandela International Airport in Praia.
