Cidade Velha, Santiago

About Cidade Velha, Santiago

Cidade Velha stands out for the history built into the place itself. As the oldest colonial settlement in the tropics and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it brings together cobbled streets, old churches, fortress views, and a stronger sense of Cabo Verde’s past than you get in a typical beach stop. It works well if you want to add something cultural and more rooted to your time on Santiago.

When to visit

The long dry season is the best time to visit, with sunnier days, lower rainfall, and more comfortable conditions for walking the historic streets and monuments.

Most popular: December - April

Spring · Mar, Apr, May

Spring is one of the strongest times to visit Cidade Velha, with warm weather, very little rain, and clear light that suits heritage walking and coastal views beautifully. The town feels bright, open, and comfortable, making it ideal for slow exploration of its streets, churches, and fortress remains.

Summer · Jun, Jul, Aug

Summer grows warmer and gradually less predictable, especially toward August when the wetter period begins. It can still be rewarding, but humidity and rain chances rise, so the experience feels less consistently crisp than in the core dry season.

Autumn · Sep, Oct, Nov

Autumn is the rainiest part of the year, with September typically the wettest month. The surrounding landscape can look greener and more alive, but showers and cloud make this a less reliable season for long outdoor visits and panoramic sightseeing.

Winter · Dec, Jan, Feb

Winter is dry, breezy, and very appealing, with mild temperatures and very low rainfall. It is one of the best seasons to enjoy Cidade Velha’s UNESCO-listed heritage, scenic setting, and relaxed atmosphere without the wetter late-summer interruptions.
