Viana Volcano stands out for the landscape more than anything else. This low extinct volcano in southeastern São Vicente feels very different from the island’s beach and city stops, with a dry, open setting and a crater that makes the area especially interesting if you want to see a more rugged side of the island. It also works well as part of a wider outing around Calhau and the east coast. 

When to visit

November to July is the strongest window for dry hiking weather, while August to October is hotter and slightly rainier on São Vicente.

Spring is one of the best times to explore Viana Volcano, with warm sunshine, very little rain, and clear conditions that sharpen the crater’s stark volcanic textures. March to May feels open, dry, and comfortable for walking, with the surrounding São Vicente landscape looking especially dramatic under crisp light.

Summer stays warm and mostly dry through June and July, with August becoming hotter and more humid. It remains a strong season for the short hike to Viana, especially for travellers who want intense light, big views, and the crater at its most sun-baked and elemental.

Autumn is the hottest stretch of the year and also the period with the highest rainfall chance, especially in September and October. Rain remains limited overall, but conditions can feel warmer and less crisp than during the long dry season.

Winter brings bright days, cooler nights, and very little rain, making it one of the most comfortable seasons to visit Viana Volcano. This is an especially rewarding time for walking the crater rim and combining the area with Calhau’s coast and eastern São Vicente’s volcanic scenery.

Getting There

Viana Volcano is located in southeastern São Vicente, about 3 kilometres south of Calhau and around 14 kilometres southeast of Mindelo, and is usually reached by road in roughly 25 to 35 minutes from Cesária Évora Airport depending on your route.
