About Curral Velho, Boa Vista

Curral Velho feels quieter and more atmospheric than many of Boa Vista’s better-known stops. The old settlement is now in ruins, but that is part of what makes it interesting, especially with the untouched beach and protected coastal landscape around it. It works well if you want to see a side of Boa Vista that feels more raw, less built up, and a little removed from the usual beach circuit. 

When to visit

The long dry season is the best time to visit, with sunnier skies, minimal rainfall, and more comfortable conditions for exploring this exposed coastal ruin site.

Spring is one of the strongest times to visit Curral Velho, with warm weather, very little rain, and excellent clarity across Boa Vista’s south coast. The ruins, beach, and surrounding open landscapes feel especially photogenic at this time, with fewer weather-related interruptions and a calm, spacious atmosphere.

Summer stays hot and largely dry through June and July, but by August humidity and rainfall begin to build. It can still be rewarding, though the south coast becomes less consistently crisp and the exposed setting feels harsher than during the clearer dry-season months.

Autumn is the wettest part of the year on Boa Vista, with September bringing the highest rainfall and the most rainy days. The landscape can feel softer and less arid, but conditions are less dependable for coastal exploration and photography than in the long dry season.

Winter is dry, breezy, and highly appealing, making it one of the best seasons for Curral Velho. The combination of mild temperatures, little rain, and wide-open coastal light suits the ruins and nearby beach beautifully.

Getting There

Curral Velho is located on the south coast of Boa Vista, roughly 25 kilometres southeast of Sal Rei and around 45 minutes to 1 hour by road from Aristides Pereira International Airport, depending on route conditions.
