Bururi Forest Nature Reserve

About Bururi Forest Nature Reserve

Bururi Forest Nature Reserve stands out for the setting more than anything else. In the highlands of southwestern Burundi, it brings together dense montane forest, cooler air, birdlife, and a quieter atmosphere that feels very different from the busier parts of the country. It suits a trip that leans more scenic and nature-focused, especially if you want something greener and more tucked away.

When to visit

June to September is the strongest overall period, with drier highland conditions, clearer views, and easier forest access than the wetter months.

Most popular: June - August

Spring · Sep, Oct, Nov

Spring runs from Sep. to Nov. and starts fairly dry and scenic before the short rains strengthen later in the season. September is especially rewarding for clearer forest walks and broad highland views, while October and November feel greener, softer, and more changeable.

Summer · Dec, Jan, Feb

Summer spans Dec. to Feb. and brings cool, lush highland conditions with a short drier break followed by wetter spells. The forest feels rich, fresh, and deeply atmospheric, but cloud and rain are more common than in the core dry season.

Autumn · Mar, Apr, May

Autumn falls from Mar. to May and is the wettest stretch of the year, when the reserve is intensely green, misty, and dramatic. It is beautiful for forest atmosphere and waterfalls, but less reliable for easy hiking and broad scenic views.

Winter · Jun, Jul, Aug

Winter in Bururi runs from Jun. to Aug. and is the classic time to visit, with the driest weather of the year, lower cloud cover, and easier conditions for walking and sightseeing in the highland forest. This is when the reserve feels crispest and most accessible.
