Lagoa dos Arcos

About Lagoa dos Arcos

Lagoa dos Arcos gives you one of the most unusual landscapes in southern Angola, with desert scenery, freshwater lagoons, and naturally formed rock arches all in the same setting. In Namibe Province near the Curoca River, it feels remote in a way that adds to the experience, especially if you want something more distinctive than a standard beach or city stop. It is a strong choice if you want scenery that feels dramatic, quiet, and genuinely different from the usual route.

When to visit

Apr. to Jun. and Oct. to Nov. offer the best balance of warmth, comfort, and easy access for this desert oasis near the Curoca estuary.

Most popular: April - June

Spring · Sep, Oct, Nov

Spring, from Sep. to Nov., brings the desert gradually out of its coolest period, with September still mild before October and November turn warmer and brighter. It is a striking season for desert scenery and long drives, with the oasis standing out vividly against the surrounding arid landscape.

Summer · Dec, Jan, Feb

Summer, from Dec. to Feb., is warm rather than extreme by coastal desert standards, with a little more rainfall than the rest of the year and a softer, more atmospheric feel around the oasis. The contrast between the dry Namib landscape and the water-fed lagoon remains especially dramatic in this season.

Autumn · Mar, Apr, May

Autumn, from Mar. to May., is one of the strongest times to visit, with warm conditions and very low rainfall as the season progresses. It is a superb period for photography, scenic exploration, and enjoying the full visual drama of the arches and lagoon.

Winter · Jun, Jul, Aug

Winter, from Jun. to Aug., is cooler, very dry, and often beautifully clear, making it excellent for overland exploration and open desert views. The trade-off is a less warm feel, but the oasis and rock formations remain visually spectacular.
