Visiting Himba communities in Angola can be meaningful if you’re interested in learning about a way of life shaped by pastoral traditions, family structure, and a strong connection to the land. The Himba live in parts of southern Angola along the Kunene River and are closely related to the Herero. What makes the experience worthwhile is the chance to understand culture in a more direct, respectful way, beyond museums, cities, and standard sightseeing.

The dry season from May to Sep. is the easiest and most comfortable period for cultural travel in the Himba region, with clearer skies and very low rainfall around Opuwo

Getting There
From central Ondjiva, most visits to Himba communities in southern Angola are arranged by road into Cunene Province, often toward villages near Namacunde, Calueque, or more remote areas farther west. Ondjiva is the nearest major urban base and the easiest place to organize local transport or a guide.
