Cangandala National Park

About Cangandala National Park

Cangandala National Park gives you a different side of Angola, one that feels quieter, more remote, and closely tied to the country’s wildlife story. Best known as a refuge for the giant sable antelope, which is one of Angola’s most important national symbols, the park stands out for its conservation value as much as its natural setting. It is a strong choice if you want something less expected, with more depth and a real sense of place.

When to visit

The best time to visit is the cooler dry season, when roads are more reliable, wildlife viewing is stronger, and the park feels clearer, calmer, and more comfortable outdoors.

Most popular: June - October

Spring · Sep, Oct, Nov

Spring is a transition period in this southern-hemisphere setting, starting dry in September before heat and rainfall build through October and November. The park becomes greener and more humid, and while the landscape gains richness, conditions become less predictable for overland access and wildlife-focused visits.

Summer · Dec, Jan, Feb

Summer is hot, lush, and rainy, with December to February falling firmly inside the wet season. The vegetation is fuller and the park can feel dramatically alive, but heavier rain, muddier tracks, and more difficult access make it a less dependable season for classic park exploration.

Autumn · Mar, Apr, May

Autumn still carries rain early on, especially in March and April, before conditions begin improving toward May. It can be rewarding for travellers who like greener scenery, but it is not as consistently practical or comfortable as the core dry-season months.

Winter · Jun, Jul, Aug

Winter is the standout season for Cangandala, bringing cooler temperatures, dry weather, and clearer skies from June through August. These conditions are better for moving through the landscape, enjoying longer time outdoors, and experiencing the park’s rare wildlife habitat with fewer weather-related limitations.
