4 Day Livingstone Itinerary
We highly recommend staying at least four days in Livingstone. While some travellers visit only for a quick stop at Victoria Falls, the reality is thereâs far more to do here than most people realise.
The pace is relaxed, distances are short, and most activities can easily be arranged through your hotel or local operators.
TIP: The dry season is generally the best time to visit Livingstone for activities like Devilâs Pool, safaris, and clearer views of Victoria Falls.
Day 1: Victoria Falls, Boiling Pot Hike & Sunset Cruise
Walk Through Victoria Falls
Thereâs no better introduction to Livingstone than visiting the mighty Victoria Falls, known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya â âThe Smoke That Thunders.â
The walking paths along the Zambia side of the falls are breathtaking. Expect huge clouds of mist rising into the sky, roaring water, rainbows everywhere, and some of the most incredible photo opportunities in Africa.
Depending on the water levels and time of year, parts of the walk can absolutely drench you, so weâd recommend bringing:
- waterproof phone protection,
- lightweight rain jackets,
- and shoes with decent grip.
TIP: Early morning usually offers the best lighting and cooler temperatures for exploring the falls.
Hike Down to the Boiling Pot
For a completely different perspective of the falls, hike down to the Boiling Pot beneath the Victoria Falls Bridge.
The walk takes around:
- 20 minutes down,
- and about 25â30 minutes back up.
The trail itself is part of the experience. We encountered dozens of baboons along the path, with dramatic views opening up over the gorge the lower you descend.
Once at the bottom, youâll stand beside swirling rapids directly beneath the falls and towering cliffs of the Batoka Gorge.
TIP: Bring water. The climb back up can be surprisingly steep in the afternoon heat.
Zambezi Sunset River Cruise
After a full day exploring, slow things down with a Zambezi River sunset cruise.
This ended up being one of the most relaxing experiences of the trip. Drifting down the river with drinks in hand while elephants graze along the shoreline and hippos surface beside the boat feels almost surreal.
Most cruises include:
- drinks,
- snacks or canapés,
- and open-air viewing decks.
Sunset over the Zambezi is genuinely spectacular.
Day 2: Devilâs Pool, Helicopter Flight & The Boma Dinner
Swim in Devilâs Pool
Without question, this is one of the biggest bucket list experiences in Africa.
During the dry season, visitors can swim in Devilâs Pool, perched right on the edge of Victoria Falls itself.
Yes, literally on the edge.
Guides lead small groups through shallow channels before helping you into the natural rock pool overlooking the drop below. Itâs thrilling, slightly terrifying, and unforgettable all at once.
If water levels are too high and Devilâs Pool is closed, you may still be able to visit Angelâs Pool instead.
TIP: Book this activity well in advance as spots can fill quickly during peak season.
Helicopter Flight Over Victoria Falls
Seeing Victoria Falls from the air completely changes your perspective of the scale.
The famous âFlight of Angelsâ helicopter ride showcases:
- the full width of the falls,
- the winding Zambezi River,
- and the surrounding national parks.
But hereâs our biggest tip: Make sure you include the extended gorge flight over the Zambezi and Batoka Gorge.
Flying low through the dramatic cliffs and twisting river below was honestly one of the craziest helicopter experiences weâve ever done. It transforms the flight from simply scenic into something genuinely thrilling.
If youâre deciding between flight options, absolutely choose the gorge extension.
Dinner at The Boma
Finish the day at The Boma Dinner & Drum Show, one of Livingstoneâs most famous dining experiences.
Expect:
- traditional African dishes,
- live drumming,
- dancing,
- entertainers,
- and a lively atmosphere.
The experience is definitely touristy, but in a fun way. Itâs energetic, social, and a great introduction to regional food and culture.
If youâre feeling adventurous, you can even try local specialties like crocodile or mopane worms.
Day 3: Chobe National Park Safari Day Trip
Cross Into Botswana for Chobe National Park
One of the best things about staying in Livingstone is how easy it is to visit Chobe National Park in neighbouring Botswana as a day trip.
This ended up being one of the wildlife highlights of our time in Africa.
Most tours include:
- border transfers,
- a morning jeep safari,
- lunch,
- and an afternoon river safari by boat, before returning to Livingstone in time for dinner.
Morning Game Drive
The morning safari drive through Chobe National Park offers incredible opportunities to spot:
- elephants,
- giraffes,

- and if youâre lucky, big cats.
Chobe is particularly famous for its enormous elephant population, and we genuinely lost count of how many we saw throughout the day.
Afternoon Chobe River Safari
The afternoon boat safari gives you a completely different perspective compared to the morning drive.
Watching elephants swim between islands while hippos and crocodiles drift nearby was unforgettable.
The river safari is also incredible for photography because you can often get surprisingly close to wildlife from the water.
TIP: Bring a zoom lens if youâre into wildlife photography.
Day 4: Rhino Walk Safari, Gorge Picnic & Adventure Sports
Rhino Walk in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park
A game drive through Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park is one of the best ways to experience wildlife close to Livingstone.
While you may see giraffes, zebras, antelope and elephants during the drive, the real highlight is the protected rhino walking safari.
Accompanied by armed rangers, visitors can track white rhinos on foot through the bush from a safe distance.
Seeing rhinos in the wild at ground level is a completely different experience compared to spotting animals from a vehicle.
Bobo Camp Fly-In Gorge Picnic
If youâre looking for something more unique and luxurious, the Bobo Camp fly-in gorge picnic is an incredible experience.
Guests are flown into the gorge below Victoria Falls before enjoying a beautifully set-up picnic beside the river surrounded by dramatic cliffs and scenery.
