Based in Alice Springs and Uluru, they rent bikes and run guided tours through desert trails, national parks, and red dirt landscapes that hit differently when you’re not in a car. The gear is solid, the team knows the terrain, and whether you’re riding solo or with a guide, you get to connect with the land in a more active way.

Spring · Sep, Oct, Nov

Spring is dry and warm with desert wildflowers starting to appear. Morning rides are best, especially around Alice Springs or along the base of Uluru. The trails are open, the flies haven’t peaked yet, and the air still holds some coolness in the early hours. It’s a great time to explore longer routes.

Summer · Dec, Jan Feb

Summer is hot and intense. Outback Cycling runs limited tours, and it’s best to avoid midday heat. Early morning rides are possible, but hydration and sun protection are essential. It’s not the ideal time for long distances, but if you're experienced and well-prepared, some shorter tracks remain doable.

Autumn · Mar, Apr, May

Autumn is ideal for cycling in the outback. The heat starts to drop off, but the days are still long enough for full-day rides. It’s the best season for Uluru’s base ride, desert trails around Alice Springs, and overnight trips without the risk of overheating. Conditions are stable and comfortable.

Winter · Jun, Jul, Aug

Winter brings cold mornings and crisp, dry days. It’s a solid time for all-day rides, especially for those who don’t mind layering up early. The skies stay clear, the flies ease off, and the trails are quiet. It’s also the best time for longer tours and multi-day bikepacking adventures through the Red Centre.

Getting There

Outback Cycling operates in Alice Springs and at Uluru. From Alice Springs Airport, it’s about a 20-minute drive into town, where the main bike shop is located. For Uluru, fly into Ayers Rock Airport and transfer to Yulara. Bikes can be rented directly from the Cultural Centre or accommodation areas. Guided tours and bike hire details are provided at booking, with maps and trail info included.
