Canberra

About Canberra

Canberra often gets overlooked, but it’s one of the easiest cities to explore. Everything is well-planned, the streets are calm, and the mix of culture and nature is balanced. You’ve got world-class galleries, the Australian War Memorial, Parliament House, and walking trails just minutes from each other. It’s clean, uncrowded, and makes you feel like you can see a lot without rushing. Canberra works best if you like things clear, thoughtful, and easy to navigate.

When to visit

Autumn has the best mix of weather and scenery. The trees turn orange, the air is cool, and the skies stay mostly clear.

Most popular: March - April

Spring · Sep, Oct, Nov

Spring brings colour back to Canberra. Flower beds are everywhere, especially during Floriade, and the air feels fresh without being cold. It’s a great time to walk around Lake Burley Griffin, visit the Arboretum, or bike through leafy suburbs. The days warm up quickly and the city feels upbeat and open.

Summer · Dec, Jan, Feb

Summer in Canberra is hot and dry. Early mornings and late afternoons are best for being outdoors, with places like Mount Ainslie or the Botanic Gardens offering good shade. Many indoor spots like the National Gallery or Questacon give you cool air and interesting ways to spend your day. It’s less crowded than coastal cities.

Autumn · Mar, Apr, May

Autumn is when Canberra is at its best. You’ll see rich reds and golds across the city’s streets, parks, and university campus. The weather is stable and comfortable, making it easy to walk between museums or take a longer day out to the wineries or lookout points nearby. It’s calm and visually striking.

Winter · Jun, Jul, Aug

Canberra gets cold, especially overnight, but the days are mostly sunny. Snow is rare in the city itself, but nearby hills sometimes get a dusting. It’s a good season for indoor stops like Parliament House or the National Museum. Bring a warm coat and expect dry air and bright skies through most of the day.
