Gold Mountain, sometimes referred to as Stateline is another of Esmeralda County's impressive slew of ghost towns. Gold was discovered here in the 1860s, but a real boom didnt occur until the 1880s when a ten-stamp mill was constructed. The town prospered until the early 1900s, and was comprised of five saloons, two stores, a chop house, a stable, bakery, butcher, post office and several wooden, stone and canvas dwellings. Today, ruins from the mill are still standing and several stone foundations can be seen from the road, demonstrating the impressive masonry that was going on in the 1800s. Best yet, visitors can spend the night in an original miner cabin that is maintained by other ghost town enthusiasts. If you stay, treat as your own and try to leave something useful for the next visitor: propane, a camping chair, or maybe even a few beers.
