About Bon Secour Wildlife Refuge

Each year, thousands of sea turtle hatchlings take their first steps at Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, a designated area established by Congress in 1980 for the protection of threatened and endangered species along Alabama's Gulf Coast. Sea turtle nesting season begins in late May and continues through October. The eggs are protected and monitored during their incubation period and the hatchlings are seen safely to the surf as they begin their long journey to the Gulf Stream. The refuge also provides crucial habitat for the endangered Alabama beach mouse that inhabits the dunes found along the Fort Morgan Peninsula, as well as providing habitat for neotropical migratory songbirds during the fall and spring migration.

Getting There

The Refuge Office and Visitor Center is located on State Highway 180 on the Fort Morgan Peninsula in Gulf Shores. You can reach the refuge by the ferry from the west side of Mobile Bay or driving through Mobile and heading south to Gulf Shores.
