Lake Kariba

About Lake Kariba

Lake Kariba gives you a different side of Zambia, with wide water views, relaxed lakeside stays, and plenty to do beyond just taking in the scenery. Around Siavonga, it works well for fishing, boating, water sports, and slow afternoons by the shore, so the whole experience feels easier and less hurried than a more activity-heavy safari trip. It is a good choice if you want something scenic, laid-back, and still full enough to build a proper getaway around.

When to visit

Apr. to Aug. is the most comfortable overall window for Lake Kariba, with warm sunny weather and more pleasant temperatures than the hottest months.

Most popular: April - August

Spring · Sep, Oct, Nov

Spring, from Sep. to Nov., is hot, dry, and full of intense golden light, with blazing days, big skies, and a classic warm-season Kariba atmosphere. September and October are especially appealing for tiger fishing and dramatic lake scenery, while November begins the transition toward the rains.

Summer · Dec, Jan, Feb

Summer, from Dec. to Feb., is hot and wetter, bringing greener shores, stormier skies, and a more tropical feel around the lake. It is still beautiful and very atmospheric, but heat and rainfall are higher than in the cooler dry months.

Autumn · Mar, Apr, May

Autumn, from Mar. to May., is a strong shoulder season as the rains ease and the lake remains lush and vivid. March can still feel humid, but by April and May conditions are more comfortable and well suited to relaxed waterfront stays.

Winter · Jun, Jul, Aug

Winter, from Jun. to Aug., is dry, sunny, and one of the easiest times to enjoy Lake Kariba, with warm days, balmy nights, and very little rain. It is an especially rewarding season for houseboating, scenic cruising, and simply soaking up the lake’s huge views.
