Devil’s Pool

About Devil’s Pool

Devil’s Pool is one of the best-known experiences at Victoria Falls because it puts you right at the edge of the falls in a naturally formed rock pool on the Zambian side. Access is through Livingstone Island and only with a registered guided tour, since the activity depends on river levels and is only opened when conditions are considered safe. It is usually available in the lower-water period, commonly around August to January, though exact timing changes with the Zambezi.

When to visit

Visit from about mid-August to mid-January, when lower Zambezi water levels usually make Devil’s Pool accessible and the edge experience possible.

Most popular: September - October

Spring · Sep, Oct, Nov

Spring brings the hottest and driest stretch in Livingstone, with rising temperatures and increasingly clear views over the gorge. This is one of the strongest periods for Devil’s Pool, especially from September onward, when lower water levels typically support access and conditions feel thrilling, bright, and dramatic. It is also one of the busiest times around Victoria Falls.

Summer · Dec, Jan, Feb

Summer is hot, humid, and rainy, with storm activity building across the Zambezi basin. Devil’s Pool may still operate into early summer, but access becomes increasingly dependent on river levels and usually closes as the wet season intensifies. The landscape turns greener and more lush, though visibility and activity options can be less reliable.

Autumn · Mar, Apr, May

Autumn is dominated by high-water conditions after the rains, and Victoria Falls is at its most powerful and thunderous. This is a spectacular time to witness the full force of the falls, but it is generally poor for Devil’s Pool access because currents are too strong. Expect heavier spray, dramatic water volume, and fewer opportunities for edge swimming.

Winter · Jun, Jul, Aug

Winter is dry, sunny, and cooler at night, with very little rain and increasingly comfortable daytime conditions. As river levels continue dropping, this season sets up the return of water-based activities, and Devil’s Pool access can begin during the later part of winter depending on official conditions. It feels calmer, clearer, and less oppressive than the hotter months.
