Shark Bay, Sal

About Shark Bay, Sal

Shark Bay stands out because it feels a little different from the usual stop on Sal. Known for the lemon sharks that swim close to shore in shallow water, it adds something more active and memorable to the island’s beach and sightseeing mix. It also works well as part of a wider day around Pedra de Lume, so the stop feels easy to fit in without needing a full separate trip.

When to visit

November to June is the strongest window for dry, sunny conditions, while August to October is warmer and slightly more humid with Sal’s highest rainfall chance.

Most popular: December - February

Spring · Mar, Apr, May

Spring is one of the best times to experience Shark Bay, with warm sunshine, almost no rain, and clear, comfortable conditions for wading into the bay. The atmosphere feels bright and crisp, and the natural shark encounter is especially rewarding when the island is dry and visibility is strong.

Summer · Jun, Jul, Aug

Summer stays warm and very dry through June and July, with August turning hotter and a little more humid. It remains a strong season for visiting Shark Bay, especially for travellers who want intense sun, warm water, and the dramatic contrast of black lava rock against bright Atlantic light.

Autumn · Sep, Oct, Nov

Autumn is the hottest stretch of the year and the wettest by local standards, especially in September and October. Rainfall still remains low overall, so the bay remains visitable, but conditions can feel warmer and slightly less crisp than in the long dry season.

Winter · Dec, Jan, Feb

Winter brings bright days, low rainfall, and slightly cooler temperatures, making it one of the most comfortable times to visit Shark Bay. This is a particularly appealing season for travellers combining Sal’s winter-sun climate with one of the island’s most distinctive wildlife experiences.
