Terra Boa

About Terra Boa

Terra Boa stands out for the mirage more than anything else. The landscape is flat, dry, and open, but what makes the stop memorable is the way the light can create the illusion of water in the distance. It works well as part of a wider drive around Sal, especially if you want to see a side of the island that feels very different from the beach towns.

When to visit

November to June is the strongest window for dry, sunny visibility, while midday offers the best chance to see Terra Boa’s mirage effect.

Most popular: December - February

Spring · Mar, Apr, May

Spring is one of the best times to experience Terra Boa, with warm sunshine, almost no rain, and clear desert light that helps the landscape feel especially stark and expansive. It is a rewarding season for inland touring, photography, and seeing Sal’s more elemental side away from the coast.

Summer · Jun, Jul, Aug

Summer stays warm and very dry through June and July, with August becoming hotter and a little more humid. It remains a strong time to visit Terra Boa, especially for travellers who want intense light and the dramatic, heat-shaped atmosphere that makes the mirage phenomenon feel even more surreal.

Autumn · Sep, Oct, Nov

Autumn is the hottest stretch of the year and the wettest by Sal standards, especially in September and October. Rainfall still remains low overall, but conditions can feel warmer and slightly less crisp than in the long dry season.

Winter · Dec, Jan, Feb

Winter brings bright days, low rainfall, and slightly cooler temperatures, making it one of the most comfortable times to visit Terra Boa. This is an excellent season for island tours that combine the mirage stop with other inland and volcanic landscapes across Sal.
