Paul Valley, Santo Antao

About Paul Valley, Santo Antao

Paul Valley stands out for the landscape more than anything else. This is one of the greenest and most scenic parts of Santo Antão, with steep valley walls, terraced farmland, small villages, and walking routes that make the area feel more immersive than a quick viewpoint stop. It works especially well if you want to see a quieter side of the island that feels more rooted in daily life and the landscape itself.

When to visit

November to June is the strongest period for hiking, clearer views, and drier conditions, while August to October is warmer and wetter.

Most popular: December - March

Spring · Mar, Apr, May

Spring is one of the most rewarding times to experience Paul Valley, with warm temperatures, very little rain, and crisp conditions for walking through terraces, villages, and mountain trails. The landscape feels vivid and photogenic, and hiking is generally more comfortable than during the warmer late-summer period.

Summer · Jun, Jul, Aug

Summer remains highly appealing, especially in June and July when the weather is still mostly dry and the valley’s greenery continues to shine against Santo Antão’s rugged terrain. By August, temperatures and humidity rise, making longer hikes feel more demanding.

Autumn · Sep, Oct, Nov

Autumn is the warmest and wettest stretch of the year, especially around September, so hiking conditions are less predictable and views can be interrupted by cloud or showers. The valley can feel especially lush at this time, but it is not the most reliable season for long scenic walks.

Winter · Dec, Jan, Feb

Winter is one of the best times to visit Paul Valley, with mild warmth, low rainfall, and stable conditions that suit hiking and slow exploration of the valley’s agricultural landscapes and villages. It is an especially attractive season for travelers wanting comfort, scenery, and outdoor time.
