Dunes of Morrinho, Maio

About Dunes of Morrinho, Maio

The Dunes of Morrinho stand out for the contrast between golden sand, open sea views, and the quieter side of Maio. They feel less like a typical beach stop and more like one of the island’s more distinctive natural landscapes, especially if you want something simple, scenic, and a little different from the usual coastal route. The area is also known for wide views, strong light at sunset, and a more untouched feel than many better-known stops in Cabo Verde.

When to visit

The long dry season is the best time to visit, with sunnier skies, little rain, and more comfortable conditions for walking this exposed coastal dune landscape.

Most popular: December - April

Spring · Mar, Apr, May

Spring is one of the best times to experience the dunes, with warm weather, low rainfall, and excellent clarity across Maio’s northwest coast. The sands feel especially photogenic in these drier months, and conditions are comfortable for slow walks and panoramic views.

Summer · Jun, Jul, Aug

Summer stays attractive through June and July, but by August humidity and rain chances begin to build. The dunes remain beautiful, yet the weather becomes less consistently crisp than during the core dry season.

Autumn · Sep, Oct, Nov

Autumn is the wetter part of the year on Maio, so this is the least reliable season for the dunes. The landscape can feel softer and more atmospheric, but cloud and occasional rain reduce the odds of the clearest coastal views.

Winter · Dec, Jan, Feb

Winter is dry, breezy, and highly appealing, making it one of the strongest seasons for visiting. Cooler air, lower rainfall, and clearer skies give the dune system its cleanest, most expansive feel.
