Rusizi National Park

About Rusizi National Park

Rusizi National Park stands out because it feels like a very different side of Burundi from the inland hills and the city. Close to Bujumbura, the park is shaped by marshes, the Rusizi River, and the delta near Lake Tanganyika, so the setting feels quieter and more water-based than a typical wildlife stop. Hippos and birdlife are a big part of the draw, which gives it a softer, more low-key feel than a larger safari park.

When to visit

June to September is the strongest overall period, with drier weather, easier boat access, and clearer wildlife-viewing conditions.

Most popular: June - August

Spring · Sep, Oct, Nov

Spring runs from Sep. to Nov. and starts relatively dry before the shorter rains strengthen later in the season. September is especially attractive for clearer views and easier outings on the water, while October and November feel greener, softer, and more changeable around the delta and palm sector.

Summer · Dec, Jan, Feb

Summer spans Dec. to Feb. and brings warm lakeside weather with regular rain, giving the wetlands a fuller, greener, more atmospheric feel. It is still a rewarding time for wildlife and birding, but conditions are less consistently dry than in the core dry season.

Autumn · Mar, Apr, May

Autumn falls from Mar. to May and is the wettest stretch of the year, especially around March and April. The park can look lush and vivid, but rain is more frequent and the overall experience is less polished for travellers seeking the easiest and driest conditions.

Winter · Jun, Jul, Aug

Winter in Rusizi runs from Jun. to Aug. and is the classic time to visit, with the driest weather of the year, lower humidity, and easier boat-based wildlife viewing. This is when the park feels crispest, calmest, and most rewarding overall.
