The town of Goygol (formerly Helenendorf) is steeped in German history, having been colonised by the German's in 1819 and developed into a thriving wine industry. The German settlers were deported by Stalin during World War 2, but their presence can still be felt with over 300 distinctly German houses lining the town's streets.
